Music from Abruzzo

The southern folk music, like all Italian folk traditions, has its roots in a remote legendary past, when the sounds and dances were the primary forms of communication and represented important steps in the life of the community. Today southern folk music (la musica meridionale), in fact never completely abandoned, is living a kind of renewed interest in many respects.

Elli Paspala born in New York by Greek parents. She studied in the ’ Manhattan School of Music ‘, from which she took also the diploma ’ Bachelor of Arts ‘, while she took singing courses with the soprano Judith Ruskin and acting with the actor William Hickey. Then took part in concerts in the I.P.A and Canada, as well as in representations of opera, with last attitude the representation ’ Medea of ’ Gavin Bryars in the New York, in direction Bob Wilson.

Diana Torto, is a talented italian ( from Pescara , Abruzzo) jazz singer.

The band began with Michele Avolio who for thirty years has kept alive the tradition of popular music of the Abruzzo region. The sounds are for the most part inherited by the band called "Vico del Vecchio" (listen to the mp3), active from 1976 to 1995, but they are re-proposed in an original form by putting together lyrics and expressions of the vocal traditions with sounds of instruments such as guitar, mandolin, violin, cello, accordion, percussions, traditional Italian bagpipes...
